Nearly 100 senior citizens received a free, comprehensive health screening at Medanta Hospital’s newly-established Mediclinic at Defence Colony on Sunday.
The aim was to spread awareness among people, especially the elderly, about early detection of various diseases to avoid complications later in life.
The day-long health check-up, organised with the help of Defence Colony welfare association, saw 60-plus residents getting ECG, ultrasound, random blood sugar, complete blood count, eye and ENT check-ups done. “Whenever we would have health camps in our colony, we found maximum participation from senior citizens. That’s why this camp,” said Romila Dhawan, member, residents’ welfare association. Doctors belonging to various specialties from the hospital were available at the clinic to answer queries.
“Today, though age has really no bearing on the outcome of the surgeries we perform, it is always better if we can pre-empt diseases,” said Dr Naresh Trehan, chairman and managing director, Medanta-The Medicity Hospital.
The emphasis of the programme was on senior citizens, who have the tendency of delaying regular check-ups, unless there is a complication.
“In a study done in our hospital, we managed to control serious heart diseases in nearly 50% people by observing them regularly. Many of those who did not go for regular preventive check-ups went on to have serious heart diseases later. Hence, the strong need for preventive heath check-ups,” said Dr Trehan. “We understand most of them are retired and cannot afford expensive treatment,” said Dr Trehan.
