Gap between private, govt schools narrows

Students of government schools in Delhi performed better this year, with an all-time high pass percentage of 82.71 per cent, reports Amitabh Shukla.

Students of government schools in Delhi performed better this year, with an all-time high pass percentage of 82.71 per cent, which is 4.66 per cent higher than last year’s figure. “This is due to the efforts of students, teachers and the transformed approach towards education in the last few years,” said education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely.

The government has reasons to smile since the gap between private and government schools in terms of pass percentage — a miserable 20 per cent eight years ago — has narrowed considerably. This year, the gap is a mere 5.68 per cent. “We will bridge the gap next year and soon, government schools will be preferred over several private schools,” Lovely told reporters.

The minister said the improvement in performance came with a significant increase in enrolment. The number of candidates appearing from Delhi government schools this year was 68,977 against 60,555 candidates last year. Another feather in the cap of the education department is the figure of 123 students in the CBSE merit list.

Lovely said, “This shows an actual improvement in standards.”

“We hope to match the same high standards in the Class X results to be announced shortly,” the minister said.
