Geelani faces arrest for false papers

A city court on Saturday ordered framing of charges against Delhi University lecturer SAR Geelani for submitting false documents while giving surety for an accused in an attempt-to-murder case.

Chief metropolitan magistrate Vinod Yadav observed that the status report filed by police clearly said Geelani gave the wrong address and false statement in court.

If found guilty, Geelani could face up to two years’ imprisonment.

In April 2010, additional sessions judge Nivedita Anil Sharma ordered proceedings for perjury against Geelani for giving the wrong address while standing surety for an accused.

Sharma said the wrong address in the affidavit had wasted the time of the court as well as the police.

Geelani had given his address as Moti Masjid at Zakir Nagar in the bail bond of accused Mirza Iftikhar Hussian, who was acquitted in the 1996 Lajpat Nagar blast case.

Hussian, facing trial in a case of attack on an undertrial during his stay at Tihar Jail on April 15, 2008, had applied for bail, which was granted by the court on April 19.

The court noted that Geelani had produced his electoral identity card, PAN card and other identity proof bearing the same false address. An FIR was recently registered against Geelani for making anti-India speeches in October 2010.
