A nine-year-old girl of Madanpur Khadar drowned on Wednesday afternoon inside Aastha Kunj Park near Lotus Temple in Amar Colony.
Police said Janaki was playing in the park with some children when she fell in a ditch filled with water inside the park. The incident happened around 2:00 pm.
The DDA, however, called it a water body.
DDA spokesperson Neemo Dhar said: “The girl fell in one of the water bodies in the park. The reason for the death is yet to be established.”
Police said a boy sitting nearby rushed to her rescue, but the girl was already dead by the time she was pulled out of water.
Later, local people called the police and the fire department.
The girl was taken to Safdarjung Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
The victim was a student of class III in a government school in Madanpur Khadar where she lived with her parents.
The police have not registered a case yet.
