Go back to the basics. This was the demand that key RSS and VHP leaders raised at a meeting with top BJP leaders, including party president Rajnath Singh, LK Advani and Sushma Swaraj, on Thursday.
Among the various subjects discussed at the event were ways to revive the Ram Janmabhoomi temple issue as well as combat charges of Hindutva terror. However, a source said that while there was a pitch towards core Hindutva, BJP's compulsions don't permit it to be as upfront about it as the VHP.
The RSS leaders present at the meeting were Bhaiyyaji Joshi, Suresh Soni and Dattatreya Hosbale; and the ones from the VHP were Ashok Singhal and Pravin Togadia.
The leaders reportedly brainstormed on how to combat charges of Hindutva terror at various organisational levels. The BJP recently held protests against home minister Sushil Shinde's saffron terror remarks, and the VHP has decided to take out a campaign against the charges sometime in February.
The subject of Swami Vivekananda's 150th anniversary celebrations on February 18, including a Surya Namaskar programme, also found mention at the meeting. While there were speculations that the possible candidature of Narendra Modi for the prime ministerial post was discussed, sources from all the three organisations denied it.
Broad organisational issues, which assume importance at a time when Rajnath Singh is looking at forming his new team of office-bearers, were deliberated upon too. The proposed central team and BJP's organisational issues in Rajasthan also came up for discussion.
Rajnath Singh and VHP leader Pravin Togadia - both present at the meeting - termed the meeting as a "routine" one.
