Delhi government will soon appoint managing committees — comprising government officials and citizens — to run social welfare homes across the Capital. The decision was taken by the Delhi Cabinet following reports of NGOs managing some such welfare homes failing to discharge its duties.

The Cabinet on Monday decided that each of the 26 welfare homes will have an apex committee with four government officers and three citizens, including social workers, advocacy groups and civil society to supervise it.

Senior Delhi government officials said there are 26 such homes providing shelters to mentally challenged, destitute, the elderly, beggars and leprosy patients. Officials said management reforms had become pertinent after 52 mentally unstable died at Asha Kiran in 2009 alone.

Though the government had hired two new NGOs in 2010 to run the institution the social welfare minister had expressed its displeasure and managed to scrap the contracts.
