Inder alias Bengali had died in police custody on the intervening night of October five-six, the rights body noted. Police had claimed that they had arrested Bengali with a knife near police booth 27 block in Trilokpuri while he was loitering in a suspicious condition, NHRC noted.

A case was registered against him under Arms Act and he was lodged in a lock up of Mayur Vihar Police Station. Police claimed that Bengali was found lying unconscious in the lock up next morning.

He was rushed to Lal Bahadur Hospital in Khichripur for treatment, but he did not survive. "Post-mortem revealed multiple injuries on his body," NHRC noted.

Delhi Police failed to explain how multiple injuries were inflicted on the body of the victim, it added. "The Commission, therefore, concluded that Delhi Government's failure to explain the injuries on the body of Bengali lent credibility to the allegation that he was severely beaten by police leading to his death," NHRC observed.
