The national Capital’s latest unruly public transport vehicle, Gramin Sewa, is likely to get designated halt-and-go points soon. Currently, there are no such points or parking areas designated for the fleet of over 6,200 vehicles.
The traffic police have identified about 60 spots - mostly in rural Delhi locations - as halt-and-go points.
“We recently conducted a survey of Delhi roads and found that these vehicles need to be provided with designated spots for picking and dropping passengers. We have written to the transport department to notify these areas as soon as possible,” said Anil Shukla, additional commissioner of police (traffic).
In the list of identified locations, the traffic police have ensured that no such vehicle is allowed to halt or park near DTC bus stops.
“We recently made a presentation to the L-G and raised certain important issues such as designated halt-and-go points, parking lots and route rationalisation of Gramin Sewa vehicles,” said Shukla.
According to the traffic police’s proposal, the halt-and-go spots can accommodate a minimum of five and a maximum of 15 vehicles at a time for picking and dropping commuters.
The transport department has been asked to put adequate signages with the capacity of vehicles.
Once these areas are notified, the traffic police will prosecute Gramin Sewa vehicle operators who pick commuters from non-designated spots.
