Delhi's landlords and tenants seem to be shying away from the mandatory police verification with statistics showing that nearly half of those who rent accommodation did not get their antecedents verified.

Out of 1,35,120 tenants traced by police in the city this year till September 15, a whopping 49 per cent or 65,692 were found staying in rented accommodations without the mandatory verification.
According to official figures, police visited 8,23,735 houses this year from February 1 to September 15 during a drive. While police found that 69,428 tenants were verified, 65,692 did not bother to get their verification done.
"Delhi is the national capital and there is a floating population. Time and again we have been asking landlords to ensure that their tenants are verified by police," a senior police official said.
There was a "special need" to get such verifications done as the capital is always on the terror radar, he said.
"There are possibilities that terrorists could rent an accommodation here and carry out strikes. If there is some kind of checks, we feel that there is a possibility of tracking them," he said.
