The Delhi High Court on Friday stayed the notification asking lawyers and doctors to pay conversion and parking charges for using their residential premises for professional activity.
The Delhi Development Authority had issued the notification implementing regulations issued by the Urban Development Ministry under the proposed Masterplan of 2021.
As per the regulations, the Ministry seeks to collect charges from those who are using their residences for commercial and professional activities. These charges, the Ministry claims, will be utilised to construct parking lots in Delhi. The last date for applying for conversion is June 30.
The Delhi High Court Bar Association and the Delhi Medical Association challenged the notification through separate writ petitions. The two bodies stated that the DDA was not empowered under its own Act to charge parking fees.
The court issued notices to the DDA and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the New Delhi Municipal Council, which are charging the fees.
