The BJP does think so.

The party has been trying to bring the Centre on the mat over price rise — mainly the decision to deregulate petrol prices — but fears that the effort may come to naught, as any uproar on “saffron terror charges” will make the Left join hands with the government on the issue.

“With the West Bengal polls approaching and the Left front finding itself in a corner over loss of urban votes, minority votes and votes in Maoist-hit districts, the Left is trying hard to regain lost ground,” said a senior BJP leader.

“It will try to make gestures towards minority votes, 25 percent of the state’s population, by joining the chorus against Hindutva terror reports whenever the issue comes up. This will deal a blow to Opposition unity against price rise.”

This approach also signals a tacit attempt on the BJP’s part to show the terror charges are a Congress conspiracy to break Opposition unity on inflation.

The BJP has already planned to make inflation an issue in the coming session of Parliament. “We will hand over 10-crore signatures against inflation to the President on July 29,” said BJP general secretary Vijay Goel.
