Group housing societies — which are being asked to pay property tax by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) — have claimed that they are being targeted. The societies are now mulling to approach the civic agency over the issue.
“A number of societies in Dwarka have been served notices. How can they impose taxes on the common area? We are providing services to people, which otherwise should be provided by the government. And, in lieu of that, they want us to pay tax,” said Suresh Bindal, president of IPEX Societies Mahasangh.
Besides, the civic agency has also issued a circular to the group housing societies, stating that they need to pay tax for any commercial establishment located within the premises such as community centre, club, guard room, swimming pools, pump house etc.

“The tax will be assessed on the basis of merit. If they fail to do so, their properties or bank accounts will be attached by us,” said a senior MCD official.
