"Had I been the home minister, I would have put Varun Gandhi behind the bars," Lalu Prasad told reporters in New Delhi.

Varun Gandhi, 29, grandson of Indira Gandhi and nephew of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Pilibhit constituency for the Lok Sabha poll.

He is in midst of a raging controversy over his alleged hate speech against Muslims.

Lalu Prasad said the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the BJP are trying to communalise the society and Varun Gandhi is being used as a tool for that.
