The KK Birla Foundation has conferred electrical engineering professor at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai Subhasis Chaudhuri with the 20th GD Birla Award for Scientific Research for the year 2010.
The award was “instituted in 1991 for according recognition to high calibre scientific research undertaken by Indian scientists living and working in India”, said a release from the Foundation.
The award, which carries prize money of Rs 1.5 lakh, is meant for scientists below the age of 50.
Chaudhuri — born in 1963 in West Bengal — has made important contributions in the area of electronic communications.
An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, he completed PhD from the University of California, San Diego, in 1990, and joined IIT Mumbai as assistant professor in the same year. He is currently serving as an Institute Chair Professor and the Dean of International Relations.
Among the previous awardees of the GD Birla Award for Scientific Research are eminent scientists like RA Mashelkar, Ashoke Sen and Goverdhan Mehta, who were later elected as Fellows of the Royal Society, London.
The selection board for choosing the awardee — which is headed by the president of the Indian National Science Academy — comprises eminent scientists.
