BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) has found that in east Delhi, illegal jeans factories are stealing R2 crore of power every month.

“Illegal jeans factories in east Delhi’s Krishna Nagar area are not only indulging in rampant theft of electricity, but are also causing loss of crores in revenue to the Sales Tax and Excise departments. These illegal factories also indulge in misuse of ground water,” said a discom official.

“BYPL is writing not only to the police but also to the Excise, Sales Tax and environment departments, asking them to help them in their campaign against these illegal factories,” said a senior discom official.

Officials further added that during raids conducted by the BYPL teams, they were stopped from entering these factories and were manhandled too. “During the last few years, the quantum of load has significantly increased in the Krishna Nagar, and due to this, BYPL increased the number of sub-stations from two to five. But because of excessive power theft, the transformers are getting over-loaded, causing frequent incidents of tripping,” added the official.
