The varsity’s move will enable an M.Tech student, for instance, to study sociology papers.

“Students can opt for courses at the postgraduate level cutting across disciplines and faculties. This will bring greater diversity and flexibility in academic programmes of the University,” a statement said.

The system allows students to choose two courses (for a total of eight credits) from outside their department. A student can choose only one such course per semester, though the number could go up to four in the coming years. A postgraduate student in Jamia has to opt for 16 papers of four credits each.

Varsity officials argued that the system aims to promote interdisciplinary courses by giving students a wider choice of subjects.

“For instance, an MA student can now choose courses from other departments of the other faculties as well as various centres,” the statement said.

Jamia is one of the few institutions in the country to have introduced a credit transfer system at the postgraduate level.
