Last month, Delhi Police had decided to provide coaching to underprivileged boys and girls for competitive exams. After giving coaching for BEd, southeast district police have decided to ask youths of Jamia Nagar to appear for sub-inspector exam of Delhi Police.

“Many of them want to join the force but can’t due to lack of facility. By providing them coaching, we can help them clear the written exam,” said Ajay Chaudhry, additional CP (southeast).

Police have engaged an NGO, Shikhar, to establish the coaching centre for students from economically weaker sections.

“We have got a good response. The first batch of 40 students appeared for the BEd entrance examination in Jamia Millia University. We will meet the residents to convince them to sent all boys and girl for the coaching,” Chaudhry added.

The Jamia Nagar police station consists of a library centre, which is currently being used as a coaching centre.

A senior police officer, who did not want to be named, said that the number of Delhiites especially Muslims joining the Delhi Police was not enough and this initiative would help in changing that. “They know the area better than anyone else and if a member of their area will represent Delhi Police, residents will feel comfortable,” the officer added.

The project was initiated to encourage young minds and advocate female education in the society. “Initially, we faced resistance from the locals as people with political links claimed that we had a vested interest and we are preparing informers in the name of educating children. But residents finally agreed and we are getting a good response,” the officer added.
