Japanese Encephalitis: 4 cases reported

The Delhi government has increased surveillance around Jehangirpuri and Rohini after four positive cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) were reported in the areas. This is the first time that the disease has been reported in the Capital.

Dr AK Walia, state health minister, has directed all civic agencies to take precautionary steps to contain the mosquito-borne disease.

"We are keeping a close watch on both these areas to ensure there are no new cases. We have stepped up our de-fogging exercise to prevent mosquito breeding as JE is also vector-bourne," said NK Yadav, municipal health officer, MCD.

Meanwhile, Dr Walia has announced the setting up of three new diagnostic centres to offer treatment to JE affected people at Babu Jagjiwan Ram Hospital in Jehangirpuri, Mahrishi Balmiki Hospital in Pooth Khurd and Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini.

According to Health department officials, four confirmed cases have been reported.
