JNU scholar arrested for molesting help

The police have arrested a 35-year-old PhD scholar of Jawaharlal Nehru University for allegedly molesting his 14-year-old domestic help. HT reports.

The police have arrested a 35-year-old PhD scholar of Jawaharlal Nehru University for allegedly molesting his 14-year-old domestic help.

The girl, from Orissa, worked for and lived with Mohammed Azimuddin and his wife at the Mahanadi hostel on campus.

“His wife, also a research scholar, was out of town. The help escaped on Friday and reported the matter to a neighbour, who called the police,” an officer said.

“The girl told us he had been trying to rape her for the last three days.”

A case of molestation has been registered at Vasant Kunj police station. Since the girl is a minor, Azimuddin could also face action under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986.

“The girl has been sent to a shelter and her parents called from Orissa,” the officer said.
