Special judge M.L. Tahilyani said the trial court had found enough evidence of involvement in the terror attacks against 20 Pakistanis, including Lashkar-e-Tayyeba founder Hafiz Saeed and its operations chief Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.

The Mumbai Police had in its chargesheet named 35 Pakistani nationals as those involved in the attacks but who remained to be arrested.

In his first reaction to the verdict, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Pakistan should stop exporting terror. “The judgment is a message to Pakistan that they should not export terror to India. If they do and if terrorists are apprehended, we will be able to bring them to justice and give them exemplary punishment,” he said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh — who at a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart in Thimphu last week gingerly took steps to resume dialogue — had made it clear that “credible action” to restrain Hafiz Saeed was the least New Delhi expected.
