Kanda dodges arrest, turns himself in

It was 4am on Saturday. A white Maruti Eeco braked in front of the Ashok Vihar police station in north Delhi. And before the cops could react, Gopal Goyal Kanda, former Haryana minister and now an accused in the Geetika Sharma suicide case, came out — after playing hide-and-seek with the police for 12 days.

Kanda let it be known on Friday that he wanted to surrender to “join the investigation”. But the Delhi Police weren’t willing to allow him any space, especially after the high court pulled them up for not being able to nab him.

Delhi Police commissioner Neeraj Sharma tweeted: “We will get Kanda soon enough. Our best boys are on the job.”

About a thousand cops got down to put up barricades on every road and check every car in north Delhi so Kanda could be arrested before he surrendered.

How could Kanda slip through the police net? Sources said the vehicle he was travelling in had a press sticker to keep the police away. Kanda was later produced at Rohini court and was sent to police custody for seven days.

On August 14, the Delhi Police opposed Kanda's anticipatory bail plea in the high court saying they needed to quiz him.

A Delhi court later issued a non-bailable warrant against him.
