The accused demanded a ransom of Rs 30 lakh from the boy's father—an employee with MTNL—police said, adding a third accused is absconding.

Deepanshu Singh, a class V student at Shanti Gyan Niketan Public School in Dwarka was reportedly abducted very close to his home when he went out to buy cold drinks, police said.

The two accused have been identified as Navdeep Singh (21) and Sandeep Rathee (25). While Singh used to work as a driver with the boy's father, Rathee was employed as a conductor in a Blueline bus, police said.

“The three accused met at a local gym. They have girl friends also. Being financially weak the accused could not fulfill expenses and thus became debt ridden,” said Sharad Aggarwal, DCP (west).

Of the 25 cases of kidnapping for ransom reported this year, 13 were schoolchildren, police said.

According to police data, almost all of the kidnappings involved someone known to the family.

"On august 31 they dragged the boy in their car. When the boy raised an alarm they started beating him up,” said an officer.
