Credit it to the Left unity. The CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta will be in the joint parliamentary committee probing 2G spectrum among the 20 Lok Sabha members. The 30-member committee will have ten MPs from Rajya Sabha, and CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury is likely to represent the Left block.

Maintaining that the CPI(M) should have got one seat each from the two houses of Parliament in the JPC on the strength of its numbers, Yechury told reporters: “in the larger interests and in the interests of Left unity, (CPI leader) Gurudas Dasgupta had been given the seat in Lok Sabha.” The CPI (M) has 16 MPs in Lok Sabha, and CPI has four.

Further quizzed whether this was the first gesture the CPI (M) has shown to the CPI or other parties in the block for the Left unity, Yechury said “n six of its seven terms in the state (West Bengal), the CPI(M) could have itself formed government as it had a majority on its own. But we have been steadfast in maintaining a Left Front government for the sake of Left unity.”
