Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan is learnt to have pointed his fingers to the corruption cases such as the 2G spectrum scam for the dismal performance of the Congress in the recent municipal polls of the state.

Chavan, who became the CM of the state in 2010, on Saturday met party president Sonia Gandhi. This was Chavan’s first visit to the party chief after the Congress failed to win the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls. The meeting also assumes significance in the backdrop of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in the state.
Sources in the Congress claimed Chavan explained that the recent corruption charges and scams had a negative impact in the urban areas—especially in Mumbai—where municipal polls took place. Chavan, who maintains a clean image, is also believed to have said corruption charges had a negative impact among the young voters. He is also believed to have told Gandhi that the Aadarsh housing scam was also seen as a major damper for the party’s poll campaign.
