From being considered an immoral activity half a century back to becoming a rage today, dance has come a long way in India. It is a form of expression that has become immensely popular with school as well as college students.

"Around 90% of the students that we get are from schools and colleges. We also get a lot of students for short term courses during the extra curricular activities quota trials in the university," said Niharika Soni, marketing executive, Shaimak Davar Institute (SDI), Delhi.

Though the institute did not teach different forms earlier it has been forced to demarcate between groups learning hip-hop, jazz and contemporary dance due to the growing awareness among students. While many of these students are not part of the dance societies in college, all of them share a passion for dance.

"It is very difficult to get into the societies in college so a lot of talented dancers join classes outside college," said Ishita Verma, a student at Kamla Nehru College, who has been learning dance at Danceworx for five years.

This trend has not only resulted in the proliferation of dance schools but a lot of independent dancers have now started to open their own institutes.
