Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee met Prime Minister Mamohan Singh on Wednesday amid the controversy sparked by her remarks dubbing Maoist leader Azad’s death as “murder”.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister P Chidambaram were also present at the 40-minute meeting.
The meeting assumes significance in view of Mukherjee’s assurance to the Lok Sabha that he would ascertain the facts of the case relating to Mamata’s remarks at Lalgarh and revert to the House.
After the meeting, Mamata dashed off to Kolkata for the launch of a special train on Mother Teresa’s birth centenary on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mamata said they discussed Bengal-related issues like CPI(M)-sponsored terror.
Reiterating that CPI(M) cadres were accumulating illegal arms on a large scale, she demanded their recovery by the central forces.
She also demanded withdrawal of joint anti-Maoist operations by central paramilitary forces and police in West Bengal.
Asked about the response of the Prime Minister, she said, “I will not say.”
Chidambaram has lamented that he had not received any credible response from rebels after the Centre’s appeal to abjure violence and come for talks. “I regret to say that there has been no direct and credible response to our offer of talks,” he said.
