Man accused of biting off wife’s ear walks free

On October 21, 2010, Shruti saw the devil in her husband Ramesh. In a complaint to the police, she alleged that her husband bit her right ear during an argument. But 20 months down the line, a city court has let the husband off as the complainant failed to identify him as the perpetrator of the crime.

Metropolitan magistrate Sunil Kumar acquitted northwest Delhi resident Ramesh after his wife Shruti told the court that she was alone at home when some unknown person entered the house. She said the person bit her ear when she raised an alarm. She told the court "at that time she could not notice the face of that person".

In her complaint, Shruti had accused her husband of biting her ear in the presence of his nephew. But in the court she said since there was no electricity in the house, she wasn't able to identify the man who bit her.

The judge said, "There is only one alleged eye-witness i.e. complainant/injured. She, however, has turned hostile and has failed to identify the accused to be the perpetrator of the present offense."
