A Delhi court has ordered a man to double the maintenance to his estranged wife after refusing to believe that he lost his job due to marital discord and suspecting that he lied to the court about his salary.

The court held that Rakesh Kumar had in order to avoid his legal responsibility produced a certificate from a firm Fone Zone stating he was its field executive working at a monthly salary of merely Rs5,000. Kumar was directed to pay a monthly maintenance of Rs3,500 to his wife Ruchika and Rs2,500 to their minor son.
Ruchika had moved the court challenging the January 2011 order of a magisterial court which had awarded a maintenance of Rs1,500 each to her and their son. She said the lower court had failed to assess their requirements and income of Kumar, who was working as sales manager with Reliance Communication at a salary of Rs20,000 per month.
