Man sets self on fire, blames son’s wife before dying

A 54 year old man died after he was set on fire in Alipur area of outer Delhi on Saturday evening. The victim, in his dying statement, blamed his daughter-in-law and her family members.

However, according to the police the daughter-in-law was in police station when the incident took place.

“There was a family dispute and to resolve the issue we had called the family members to the Alipur police station. Suddenly Bijender, one of the family members got up and rushed to his home. Later he set himself on fire,” said a senior police officer who didn't want to be named. Bijender was a farmer and owned a property in the area. He had a dispute with his daughter-in-law over the property.

“When Bijender was rushing home, an eyewitness saw him carrying a kerosene bottle. Our staff also chased him but he locked it and set himself on fire,” the officer added.

Police broke open the door and doused water him. He was taken to a nearby hospital with burn injuries. A case of attempt to suicide was registered at Alipur police station and further investigations were on.
