Man shot at for chasing snatchers

Surender Chadha, a resident of Shahdara, had returned from a relative's residence in Pitampura, de-boarded at, and stepped-out of, the Shadhara Metro station around 4pm, when the incident occurred, said Sanjay Kumar Jain, deputy commissioner of police (northeast).

"Chadha was riding his bike out of the Metro Station's parking when two bike-borne assailants snatched his wife Anju's chain. Alerted by her screams for help, Chadha saw the assailants zoom down the road and was shot by the pillion rider when he attempted to chase them," DCP Jain said.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred on a slip road running parallel to the Shahdara Metro Station parking, where Chadha had parked his motorcycle.

"He was arguing with one of the attendants because he had misplaced his parking slip and was showing him the registration certificate of his vehicle when his wife started screaming for help. He rushed-off behind the assailants and had just taken a left turn at the end of the slip road, when one of them shot him in the stomach," said Manish Kumar, a parking attendant.

"This is horrible. What can we say? The police are doing nothing. What's the whole point in the police making tall claims and promises that they just can't keep?" asked Davinder Kaur, Anju's mother.

DCP Jain said a case had been registered at the Shahdara Police Station and police deployment in the entire area stepped-up after the incident.
