A large number of students and businessmen are now opting to learn Chinese over traditional languages. This, so they can be part of the global political and academic structure.
Students are gradually giving German, French and Spanish languages a miss, a fact that is cemented by the growing demand of Chinese in universities across the country.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has last week collaborated with the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), Taiwan, to help students learn Chinese. “It is essential to learn the language because China has become a part of global politics,” IIT Madras director Bhaskar Ramamurthi said.
Agrees professor Anita Sharma, head of department of East Asia studies, Delhi University. “There is growing popularity for Chinese and many universities have started its course. Students are selecting this as there are ample job opportunities in various fields. They are using Chinese for research as well.”
About 300 students in Delhi University are currently learning Chinese.
Says a Chinese teacher: “Many businessmen are asking their children to learn Chinese because they cannot afford not to know the language.”
Observing that the number of students enrolment in her institute increasing by nearly 50% in the last three years, Purnima Garg, director, The Chinese Language Institute, said, “There is a lot of synergy between India and China in academics, tourism and trade.”
