Mandatory UID: Govt to create awareness

To ensure that people are aware that they need UID (Unique Identification) cards for public dealing, Delhi's revenue secretary has directed officials of all the districts to put up a notice outside their offices.

The move has come a day after HT reported that revenue department was insisting on a UID card/enrollment number from the people for various services.

Revenue secretary Dharam Pal has asked all district authorities to inform the people about the UID cards being made mandatory.

"We will be advertising about this move through newspapers and other channels to create awareness. To begin with, all SDM and deputy commissioner offices will display the information on their notice board," said Dharam Pal.

Apart from this, the department is also re-designing its forms to add UID number as a component that are used for property, marriage registration and for other purposes.

"Forms are being re-designed and we will put them into circulation next week onwards. The idea is that we will be able to create a database using the unique identification number and tracking files will become an easier task. This will ensure greater transparency as well," said a senior Delhi government official.

Delhi government will launch a massive awareness drive informing people about the UID centres where people can get their cards made.

"We want more and more people to have a UID card and people can visit SDM or deputy commissioner offices to enrol themselves. We will organise special camps for this purpose," added the official.

The Delhi government is considering making UID numbers mandatory for accessing all public services from next year. A proposal to this effect has already been made in a meeting in September and it will be forwarded to the cabinet soon for approval.
