Coming down heavily on the Delhi Police, urban development minister AK Walia said in the past one year not a single case had been registered under the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Properties Act 2007.

“The violation is badly affecting the image and beauty of the city. In case such violation continues, we will not be able to fulfil our aspirations of making Delhi a world-class city. Mere coming up of modern buildings and the latest infrastructure is not going to help unless we make sincere and serious efforts to keep our exteriors clean and shining. The large-scale defacement is eclipsing the sheen of the city,” said Walia.

On Wednesday, the minister had called a meeting to take stock of the implementation of the Act.

According to the department officials, the police have been directed to register cases. “I have instructed the PWD and MCD to remove all type of banners, posters, commercial boards, political boards and hoardings immediately,” added Walia.

Walia appreciated the efforts of the NDMC, which has been able to remove all such hoardings, banners in the minimum possible time. The civic agency removed 12,916 violating articles during 2011.

“The MCD and PWD have been directed to remove such violating articles and bring those responsible for the offence to the book,” said a senior Delhi government official.
