The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Friday sealed 18 shops on Desh Bandhu Gupta Road in Karol Bagh after illegal construction was detected. The sealing has been done at the behest of the Supreme Court monitoring committee that has been asking the MCD to crack its whip on illegal construction in the city’s markets.
Deep Mathur MCD spokesperson said the 18 shops had flouted building bylaws and so they had been sealed. He added that more shops may get notices in future. “The shops had additional construction done on them,” he said.
From next week, the MCD will begin sending sealing notices to shops in Gaffar Market. Sources say the drive in Karol Bagh zone will affect more than 5,000 shops. Main roads like Arya Samaj, Ajmal Khan Road and Desh Bandhu Gupta Road will be affected.
“Under Master Plan 2021, while some roads have been notified as commercial or mixed land use, others still remain residential. However, traders have opened shops on those stretches too. If the sealing drive starts, a large number of shops will be affected,” added the official.
Traders claim that since Karol Bagh is a Special Area relaxed norms are applicable on it, which is why commercial activities are allowed even from colony roads, too. The market was set up in 1952 and has been growing steadily into one of the biggest markets. According to MCD officials, over the years, the shop owners have been adding additional portions to the buildings without getting the prior requisite approval.
