MCD to ‘weed out’ aging, inefficient staff

In a proposal to be tabled in the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the civic agency has decided to conduct a medical examination of all those employees who are too old to work to find out their actual age.

Those found to be older than the age of superannuation will be asked to take voluntary retirement.

According to the civic agency, decades ago when people were recruited in MCD, candidates were not required to submit any age proof. Therefore, many class ‘C’ and ‘D’ employees reduced their actual age in the application forms at the time of joining.

Now, while their real age has slowed them down, they cannot retire as they are still below 55 years of age on paper.

To deal with the situation, the MCD has proposed to implement a voluntary retirement policy for them, as they can afford living on pension. It will soon come up with a circular in this regard for all employees that they can avail voluntary retirement.

The examination will be conducted by a medical board, which will be set up for the purpose to indicate the correct age of the employees and also to certify whether they are medically fit.

The C and D class employees include gardeners, beldars and other sanitation workers. An MCD official said the civic body is facing a lot of problem with old employees who do not show up for work due to illness.

“There are 2,000 beldars in MCD and they are supposed to report for work at 6 in the morning. But many old timers come late and the work gets affected. It is best for the MCD and the employees if they take voluntary retirement,” he added.
