The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has said it was difficult to implement the Supreme Court approved policy on hawking as it would lead to cancellation of 75 per cent of existing sites, if implemented in its present form.

MCD’s main objection is with regard to the mandatory provision of leaving five feet space for pedestrians on the pavements declared as hawking zone.
MCD counsel Sanjiv Sen argued before a bench headed by Justice S.B. Sinha that it was very difficult to implement the scheme, as the pavements in Delhi are not 9-feet wide, as per the policy. The corporation requested the court to reduce the width of an “eligible footpath” from 9 feet to 7 feet.
