MG Road widening put on fast track

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded the contract to widen a seven-km stretch on MG Road between Andheria Mor and Gurgaon border to a private sector firm, reports Sanjeev K Ahuja.

The Rs 108 crore, six-lane project will be completed before the Commonwealth Games starts in October.

The decision on the Gurgaon stretch has yet not been taken as the Haryana government and NHAI are yet to reach a consensus on the alignment.

According to NHAI officials, work on the project will start soon, as land transfer issues with private players and the Indian Air Force (IAF) have been resolved.

Construction on the elevated Gurgaon Metro line running on the median of the MG road too has been completed.

RITES had prepared the detailed project report for this project. As per the report, there are no flyovers and elevated structures on the entire stretch.

The six-lane MG Road, when ready, will have a footpath for pedestrians and a separate lane for slow-moving vehicles, NHAI officials said.

Instead, the state government has asked to the ministry of road transport and highways to widen an existing 13-km-long arterial 4/8 lane road cutting off from MG Road near Sikanderpur.

The road connects Gurgaon Expressway at Hero Honda Chowk.

The government claims the union ministry has accepted its suggestion.
