The National Commission for Minorities summoned top police officers in Gujarat over a complaint filed by a 2002 riots survivor, promoting the state to question the commission’s jurisdiction.
The minority rights body, led by Wajahat Habibullah, called for the police officers following a complaint filed by Niyazbibi, a riots survivor who had alleged discrimination and unfair treatment by the authorities.
In January, Habibullah had requested a meeting with CM

Narendra Modi to flag its concerns. Those the watchdog had summoned included suspended IPS officer and Modi detractor Sanjeev Bhatt, ex- DGP of Gujarat RB Sreekumar among others.
The state government, however, chose to press a law officer to represent its case, who argued the watchdog should not take up riots-related cases, since they were being already investigated by various courts.
