The National Commission for Minorities summoned top police officers in Gujarat over a complaint filed by a 2002 riots survivor, promoting the state to question the commission’s jurisdiction.

The National Commission for Minorities summoned top police officers in Gujarat over a complaint filed by a 2002 riots survivor, promoting the state to question the commission’s jurisdiction.

The minority rights body, led by Wajahat Habibullah, called for the police officers following a complaint filed by Niyazbibi, a riots survivor who had alleged discrimination and unfair treatment by the authorities.

Narendra Modi to flag its concerns. Those the watchdog had summoned included suspended IPS officer and Modi detractor Sanjeev Bhatt, ex- DGP of Gujarat RB Sreekumar among others.

The state government, however, chose to press a law officer to represent its case, who argued the watchdog should not take up riots-related cases, since they were being already investigated by various courts.
