Teachers of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) schools may not return to teaching duties anytime soon.
The Electoral Commission has passed an order that says teachers engaged in a survey for allotment of voter ID cards will now distribute these cards as well.
Akhil Delhi Prathmik Shikshak Sangh (ADPSS) general secretary Ram Chandra Dabas said, “The new order will keep teachers tied to election duties till September. Schools opened on July 1 but teaching has been affected with only a few teachers around, the rest being on election duty. They are only taking attendance and attend to midday meals arrangement.”
The ADPSS demonstrated against the deployment of teachers for election duty outside the MCD headquarters. Dabas also warned that if the deployed teachers were not relieved from duty by July 10, the union would take this movement further and demonstrate outside the Delhi government headquarters at ITO.
The Hindustan Times had highlighted on June 30 that MCD schools were set to reopen without 10,000 teachers after the summer vacations.
Giri Raj Sharma, president ADPSS, said, “Around 13,000 MCD teachers out of 15,500 permanent teachers have been engaged for election duty. Most of them are women teachers who work in very miserable conditions. They work in isolated schools from eight in the morning till late night. This has resulted in many incidents of misbehavior with these teachers. They have also lost their two months of summer vacation.”
