The police say they have tracked the mother of the two-year-old baby battling for life in an ICU of the AIIMS trauma centre and she would be brought to the Capital on Wednesday.

The woman has been identified as Munni, a domestic help who disappeared from her employer's house in Mohan Nagar in west Delhi's Uttam Nagar leaving behind the baby.

"We have traced her and by Wednesday evening she will be in our custody," said an investigating officer.

In September, Munni came to Laxmi's house and asked for a job, saying she was a widow and needed to take care of the baby. After staying there for 20 days, she disappeared, the police said.

While they refused to say where Munni was found, sources said she remarried and moved to a town in Bihar. A team has been sent to bring her to Delhi.

The baby continues to be critical but stable. Doctors hope to take her off the ventilator in a couple of days. She is responding to the antibiotics and the lung infection is under control.

Ahmed, a native of Darbhanga in Bihar, wanted to bring up the baby, as his only child -- a son -- is physically challenged, said the police. Efforts are being made to trace his friend, Manoj, who gave him the baby after Laxmi handed her over to him.
