MSM celebrates 50 years with musical

As part of its golden jubilee celebrations, Mount St Mary’s School, Delhi Cantonment, staged a mega musical titled Jesus Christ Superstar, from May 4 to 6.

As many as 500 students, including those enrolled at present as well as alumni of the institution, participated in the event. It had exotic dances, bright costumes and some soul-stirring music. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was the chief guest on the first day, while Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, attended the event on Saturday. Lt General Vijay Kumar Pillai, General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, attended the concert on Sunday.

His Excellency Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, who is the Apostolic Nuncio of India, principals of various Catholic schools in the Capital, and RK Garg, director, finance, PetroNet LNG Ltd, were also present at the concert.

Shedding light on the musical concert, which focuses on the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas, his crucifixion and resurrection, Mt St Mary’s principal Reverend Bro. Dominic Jacob termed it as “an attempt to strengthen linkages and further revitalise the progress towards the goal of imparting education for life”.

The musical was directed by George Pulinkala. Originally, Jesus Christ Superstar was a rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber was first staged on the Broadway in 1970. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform as Jesus. I am glad that I was chosen for this role,” said Clifford Alphonso, an ex-student who played the role of Christ.

“It is nice to come back to a place, which has made me what I am today. Earlier, I came back as a teacher and now, as part of this concert. It has been a great experience,” said Andrew Hoffland, an ex-student, who played the role of King Herod and also assisted the director.
