Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday said her government will soon commission the Munak canal.
The commissioning of the canal will save 80 million gallons of water every day (MGD) and will enable the government to build three more water treatment plants.
“With the commissioning of the Dwarka, Okhla and Bawana water treatment plants, it is expected that Dwarka, which is facing an acute shortage of drinking water, will get relief. We have taken up the matter with the PMO and the union water resource ministry,” said Dikshit, while laying the foundation stone of rehabilitation of various sewers in west Delhi’s Harsh Vihar.
Dikshit inaugurated two chaupals at Shakurpur Village and one at a Pitampura village. She addressed a public rally at Samrat Cinema Chowk in Shakurpur on Sunday.
“The sewer lines, laid by DDA 25 years ago, are silted up and badly damaged. Relaying of these lines will help eliminate unhygienic conditions in the area and reduce pollution in River Yamuna,” the CM said.
Nearly three lakh people in Pitampura and adjoining areas will benefit from this project, which will be completed in June 2014 and is likely to cost Rs. 44.5 crore.
