NCR should come under Delhi HC: Sheila
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit wants to take up the issue of the extension of the Delhi High Court’s jurisdiction to areas in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Dikshit told a delegation of lawyers that the state government was willing to write to the Union Law Ministry, proposing that areas in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh that fall within the NCR be placed under the jurisdiction of Delhi High Court. The High Court at present only deals with cases pertaining to Delhi. Members of Bar Associations of Delhi had approached Dikshit with a memorandum to extend the Delhi HC’s jurisdiction.
Delhi High Court Bar Association president KC Mittal said that when the NCR concept was introduced, it was presumed that the Delhi High Court would have jurisdiction of NCR towns in Haryana and UP “Residents of Sonepat, Rohtak, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Palwal, Rewari, Panipat, Jhajjar districts in Haryana and Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, Baghpat and Meerut districts in UP are forced to approach their respective High Courts to seek justice, resulting in huge expenditure,” said Mittal.
