The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to give more budgetary power to its chairperson to enable her to expedite work on projects. Earlier, the head of the municipal body had the power to pass proposals worth Rs 1 crore. Now this budgetary power has been increased to Rs 2 crore.

So proposals such as making footpaths, building toilet blocks, improving horticulture and repairing roads at an estimated project cost of less than Rs 2 crore can directly be approved by the chairperson, without bringing the proposal before the council meetings.
The decision to give more power was decided in a recent meeting after getting the home ministry's approval. According to officials, projects get delayed as they have to be approved by the council, which meets once a week to take decisions.
