Keeping in view the fact that the much-talked about intelligent traffic system is not likely to be in place soon, the traffic police have decided to take the help of red light speed cameras to curb traffic violation related to overspeeding and jumping of red light.

These cameras are digital and 'vandal-proof'. Besides, they also transmit data within two minutes.

This is a completely automatic process to catch traffic norm violators. No one get rid of penalty or prosecution, as the camera captures the photographs of the violator from different angles and the computer attached to it issues challan against the violator automatically.

"One cannot challenge its authenticity and it would not spare violators at any cost. In future, when the ITS will be in place, we will connect the cameras with the system," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (Traffic).

These cameras will be placed at 12 strategic locations, including busy intersections and accident-prone zones, said a traffic police officer.

"A dedicated team is working to identify the intersections, where cameras can be placed. We will install the system within three months," said an official. Some of the places where red light speed cameras are expected to be installed include Kautilya Marg, Aurobindo Marg, Bhishm Pitamah Marg, Bhairon Road, Lodhi Road, Shastri Park, Rohini, Dilshad Garden among others, said sources.

"Red light camera is a globally tested method and will surely help bring down road accidents," said KK Kapila, chairman, International Road Federation.

His organisation, along with ministry of surface transport, is working in a mission to bring down road fatalities by 50 % within 2012.
