Early detection of cancer can help in treatment. To ensure cases of eye cancer are detected early, Centre for Sight chain of eye hospitals has launched a referral centre for treatment of the disease.

Samples can be sent from anywhere in the country, and the report can be expected within a week. The cost may vary from R600 to R2,000, depending on the size and nature of tissue sent for testing.
“This referral centre is first of its kind dedicated to eye cancer. AIIMS has an eye pathology facility available but it’s a closed system,” said Dr Mahipal S Sachdev, chairman of the chain.
India accounts for 30% of the world’s total eye cancer patients, with 10,000 new cases getting added every year. According to the doctors, more than 95% children with life-threatening eye cancer of retina can be saved with modern treatment.
Eye cancer often has masquerading symptoms. “The pupil turning white, inflammation in the eye, pain, blood or squint can be a symptom,” said Dr Santosh G Hanovar, eye cancer specialist.
