Though challenging in view of the age of the patient, the surgery for prostate enlargement was successfully conducted at a city hospital.

It was a surgery without an incision, said Dr NK Mohanty, director Urology, Saket City Hospital.

“It was a challenge taking up a surgery of a 93-year-old man. There is a lot of risk involved in operating people at such an advanced age. We evaluated the patient and found that he could be operated upon with the help of TURis (Trans Urethral Resection in Saline),” said Mohanty.

With the help of TURis, the removal of the obstructing tissues in the prostate gland is done by a bi-polar current using cutting and vaporisation in saline. “In such kind of surgeries, winning the confidence of the patient is very important. The best way of practicing medicine is to give options to the patient and leaving it to his choice if he was ready to get operated by a particular doctor. Only if he has confidence in the doctor, a surgery is conducted,” added Dr Mohanty. Operated on April 12, the patient was discharged the next day.
