Vimla Mehra, Delhi police’s Special Commissioner of Police (Security), has been appointed as the new chief of Tihar central jail by the Delhi state government.

Delhi’s lieutenant-governor Tejendra Khanna has approved Mehra’s posting as director general (prison), according to a prison source.

Mehra, an Indian Police Service officer (IPS) of the 1978 batch of AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories) cadre, will only be the second woman chief of the prison. The first woman chief of Tihar jail was former IPS officer Kiran Bedi whose stint was between 1993 to 1995.
