The new system, said senior DIMTS officials, will sense the volume of traffic on all the four sides of the junction and allocate time accordingly.

Senior DIMTS officials said they were consulting a British company to install the intelligent signalling system.

“The new intelligent traffic signalling and management system will be based on new software called VisSim. Various data, including the volume of traffic during plying along the stretch during different hours of the day, composition of traffic and other such details are stored in the software,” said a senior DIMTS official.

“Sensors will be installed in the existing automatic traffic signalling system,” the official added.

The existing traffic signalling system has pre-defined timers, which runs on auto as well as the manual mode. When on auto mode, the traffic lights change according to the pre-defined time slots.

The British consultants, said officials, have already conducted the survey of the stretch and studied the volume, composition and direction of traffic.

The consultants are expected to give their final recommendations to improve the movement of traffic on this corridor by August 18, an official said.

To improve the stretch further, DIMTS has also decided to install closed circuit television cameras on each intersection.

The commuters will be able to see the traffic condition live on the DIMTS website — www.dimts.in

“It will give motorists the flexibility to plan their travel accordingly. If there is lot of traffic on the corridor they can defer their journey, said a senior DIMTS official.
