The underpass, unveiled by Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, will ensure smooth flow of traffic and safe movement of pedestrians between Safdarjung railway station and Moti Bagh north.

“The underpass, built at a cost of R12.33 crore, was made within a year," said a senior NDMC official said.

Commuters coming from Ring Road or Rao Tula Ram Marg can also use the underpass to reach Safdarjung station directly, without taking a longer route via Shanti Path.

The vehicular carriageway and pedestrian path on the 40-metre-long underpass is separated by a railing.

“It was constructed using box push technique instead of normal cut and cover method, thus avoiding closure of traffic lanes of Shanti Path and without affecting movement of vehicles during construction,” the official said.

NDMC chairman Parimal Rai and vice-chairperson Tajdar Babar, along with senior civic officials were present for the inauguration.

On Friday, the chief minister also inaugurated two NDMC electric substations — 33KV one at Raja Bazar in Gole Market and a 66KV one on Dr Bhishambar Dass Marg.

The cost of Raja Bazar sub-station is R10.11 crore while the one at Dr Bishambar Dass Marg cost R16.75 crore. A dedicated rainwater harvesting system has also been installed within each sub-station's compound.

These sub-stations will strengthen the power supply to the adjoining area of Pt Pant Marg, Dr Bishambar Dass Marg, Mahadeva Road, Gole Dakkhana, BKS Marg, Gole Market, among others.
